The story
The crystals are growing into streets. Someone on the other side is waiting.
A materials scientist watches the crystals in his laboratory assemble into an impossibly detailed city. Its streets change whenever he sleeps, and its inhabitants have begun leaving instructions where only he can see them. When his employers order the specimen destroyed, protecting his discovery means trusting a civilization that may have been studying him from the beginning.
