The story
Every night he stays awake, someone outside gets to live.
A night watchman starts finding mud on his shoes after dreams he cannot remember. Then he sees his shadow rise from the wall while he remains seated beside the lamp. The disappearances stop whenever he stays awake, but exhaustion is winning. When his estranged son asks to spend the night, keeping watch becomes the only apology he can still offer.
